Across Generations 2

The exhibition is dedicated to Rapla County artist Leopold Teder, whose 100th anniversary we celebrated this year. The artists’s grandchildren, Jaanus Samma and Markus Tõnisson, complement their grandfather’s work with their own creations.

Leopold Teder was born July 8, 1913 in Tartu County, Otepää town. In 1914, his parents relocated to Tartu. He graduated from the XV Primary Scool of Tartu in 1927, and from Tartu Craft School in 1933 as a furniture and car painter, and from Tartu Unified Gymnasium in 1934. Between 1930 and 1935, he intermittently studied at the Pallas Art School of Tartu. In the 1950s, he joined a long-distance course at the Tartu Art School, which he never graduated. Teder mostly worked in the media of painting and printmaking, and exhibited his works in various solo and group exhibitions since 1950. He was an active founder of the Rapla Arts’ Club. Leopold Teder died April 3, 1989.

Markus Tõnisson (b. 1972) is a painter and graphic designer, who graduated from the Tartu Art School in 1998. In this exhibition, he shows a few recent paintings.

Jaanus Samma (b. 1982) is a freelance artist who graduated fro the Estonian Academy of Art (MA) in 2009, specialising in printmaking. He continues with his doctoral studies at the same academy, specialising in art and design. He was awarded the Köler Prize by the Estonian Museum of Contemporary Art in 2011. At this exhibition, he displays large-scale photo installations.
