CONTEMPORARY ESTONIAN LITHOGRAPHY

The exhibition was put together from 30 works by well-known Estonian printmakers: Kadri Alesmaa, Toomas Altnurme, Merike Estna, Laurentsius, Kaido Ole, Marko Mäetamm, Jaak Visnap and others. The show was organized in cooperation with the Estonian Lithography Centre and featured mostly works from the ELC albums, the last of which was titled “Love in the 21st Century.”

Painters and graphic artists associated with the Centre for Contemporary Art welcomed viewers to their workshops, gave a taste of studio atmosphere, and presented works created during the year. Participants: Mikk Allas, Maiu Kangur, Katrin Kirsipuu, Eha Koit, Kaie Kulper, Helene Lasner, Aivar Mäekivi, Eha Mäekivi, Avo Päädam, Eda Taevas, Eteri Tõlgo. The exhibition was designed by Eteri Tõlgo.
Art courses were conducted by Kairi Orgusaar.
CHANDELIER

Fourteen artists presented their brand new light installations created especially for this show, under the common title Chandelier. Contemporary improvisations on the classical theme were dedicated to the victory of Light over Darkness. Participants: Sofi Aršas, Piret Ellamaa, Erki Kannus, Kati Kerstna, Anneliis Leht, Herbert Orgusaar, Kairi Orgusaar, Birgit Pählapuu, Kateriin Rikken, Kristi Ringkjob, Kalli Sein, Valev Sein, Eili Soon and Raili Velt. A musical performance at the opening was arranged by Vahur Soonberg, conductor of the Cantus choir and laureate of Culture Pearl 2012.

The first in a series of exhibitions involving artists with a local background, works by ten artists were presented along with an art calendar by the Nädaline newspaper. The calendar also gave an overview of each artist’s previous work. Participants: Kadri Alesmaa, Raul Meel, Kaido Ole, Saima Randjärv-Berlokko, Meelis Luks, Riin Pallon, Kristel Luige, Sütevaka Andres, Marilyn Jeeser and Mauri Gross. The exhibition was part of the programme of the Rapla County Art and Light Week, celebrating art as the medium of enlightenment and esprit.
TILINATORIUM

Erki Kannus’s solo project “Tilinatorium V”: This is Not a Toy: Other Means of Ringing. Tilinatorium is a project evolving in space and time; an opportunity for non-musicians to create music in new and unusual ways. Visitors were free to give a try to Erki Kannus’s interactive sound sculptures.
SoSS – the Dutch-Estonian Art Show

An inflatable bridge across Vigala River in the downtown of Rapla; waffle-baking chairs; rooms that became paintings; a castle of cigarette packs – this is just a short list of works from the magical mystery tour called SoSS. The participating artists were all unique, yet united in their quest for artistic freedom and self-expression. Participants: Rikka Horn, Lambert Kamps, Erki Kasemets, Eric Knoote,Wilma Vissers and Jan Scheerhoorn. The exhibition was curated and designed Rikka Horn.

Students of the Art Centre’s courses presented their copies of paintings by Dali, Monet, Kahlo and other great artists. Through copying, they improved their command of various painting techniques and immersed themselves in the history of art. The opening involved an action painting show by Mikk Allas, who finished his copy of Jackson Pollock’s Autumn Rhythm (No. 30) in front of the audience.
MODERN PAINTING

The greatest collection of paintings ever seen in Rapla gave a glimpse of tendencies in contemporary Estonian painting, through the works of the younger generation of painters. Participants: Piret Bergmann, Sirja-Liisa Eelma, Rikka Horn, Andrus Joonas, Andres Koort, Mara Koppel-Ljutjuk, Laurentsius (Lauri Sillak), Kaido Ole, Riin Pallon, Alvar Reisner, Kairi Orgusaar, Leho Rubis and Alide Zvorovski. Music was performed at the opening by Tiit Born.
CROQUIS

Croquis is the term for quick sketch of a live model. The show presented various drawing styles – abstract sketches, automatic drawings, realistic renderings of characters and types, underpaintings in oil et cetera. DOUBLY MEANINGLESS

Our first exhibition, titled DOUBLY MEANINGLESS, offered a selection of conceptual works of art, utilizing different media – light installations, interactive sound sculptures, photo staging, digital print, painting and book binding. At the opening, Rene Haljasmäe presented his performance “Artist Shearing Himself” and Igor Ruus his film portrait of ceramics master Leo Rohlin. Participants: Merle Kannus, Erki Kannus, Katrin
Rüütli, Kati Kerstna, Rene Haljasmäe, Riin Pallon and Kairi Orgusaar. Exhibition was designed by Merle Kannus.
The Creative Youth Society Riinimanda continues its series of exhibitions which started in 2012; participants are young choral singers who were “allowed” to express themselves visually. The paintings, drawings, photos and installations were created during summer camps in Saaremaa in 2013-2017. Also on display are the set decoratons of the legendary Riinimanda Theatre performances.
A slideshow chronicles young people’s development, and exemplifies how a supportive environment can help overcome inner barriers, and nourish confidence to state the right to creativity.

In the context of this exhibition, the Old Persian word pairidaeza (enclosed garden) suggests an ideal, ambivalent world, which isn’t necessarily imagined as otherworldly. The past contains cultural memes which were oriented not towards self-actualisation, but towards preserving balance on Earth. These memes can be revived today, if only our state of mind and actions allow it.
The paintings juxtapose vanishing tribal imagery with figures of contemporary urban dwellers, thus seeking our essential roots within hidden patterns. All life and universe are full of examples of structural similarity, repeated on both the smallest and the largest scale.
Shamanistic tribal cultures appear to have had an intuitive grasp of the connection between humans and nature. They expressed it through identifying with animals, or through symbolic body ornamentation. These paintings are a poetic nod to vanishing cultures and to the sense of oneness with, as opposed to conquest of, our environment.
