“2 D” INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF GLASS ART

2D, an international travelling exhibition of art glass, taking place for the third time, focuses on the expressive opportunities offered by two-dimensional glass. Among its main attractions are large-scale glass installations, stretching the boundaries of the medium.

The concept had its beginnings in Vilnius, with Lithuanian artist Dalia Truskaité as the initiator and main curator. Starting with the second biennial, new organisers have come from Latvia, Estonia, and Finland. The first event, taking place in 2012, brought together 32 artists from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, and Sweden; the works were exhibited in Vilnius and Klaipeda. In 2014, artists from Norway, Denmark, and Iceland joined the show, with 38 participants in total; venues included Vilnius, Jurbarkas, Pärnu, and Riga.
This year, there are 29 participants from around the Baltic Sea – Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, and Sweden, and the exhibition travels again between Vilnius, Jurbarkas, Pärnu, and Riga.

Artworks in a variety of hot and cold glassworking techniques explore the possibilities of two-dimensional glass in three-dimensional space. The so-called Vilnius School – historically a centre of 2D glass art – meets and exchanges ideas with its Baltic neighbours.
The opening will take place on Friday, December 9, 2016, at 18:00. Maili Metssalu and Ragnar Toompuu will make music at the opening.

The exhibition is open on Tuesdays to Sundays 15:00-18:00 on December 9-23.

Bringing the exhibition to Rapla was supported by Rapla County Municipal Development Fund (Raplamaa Omavalitsuste Arengufond).

METAMORPHOSIS. SIX DANISH ARTISTS. A PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

09.09.– 02.10.2016

A group of six Danish photo artists use the camera and the posssibilities of digital editing the same way a painter employs a brush and paints, or a composer employs the piano. The click of the shutter is just the beginning of the process: the artists of METAMORPHOSIS work near the boundary of fiction and reality, intermingling experimental and conventional means of expression. They create a visual language that weaves new connotations out of fiction and reality. They don’t seek beauty or harmony, but show the way to genuine self-expression through the avenues specific to photography.

Participants: Annemette Rosenborg Eriksen, Else Vins, Erik Jrgensen, Josephine Ernst, Peder Brdsted Pedersen, Peter Birk.

REFLECTIONS. AN EXHIBITION OF PORTRAITS

A portrait exhibition by artists from Rapla County demonstrates how flowing water and paint merge to create faces both familiar and unknown. The artist takes the role of dance partner for water, but also the tamer of the beast.

THE ART OF LEARNING AND OTHER ARTS: WORKSHOPS

The Art of Learning is meant as inspiration for everyone who’s involved in teaching or learning, whether at school, hobby group or self-education. This pilot project combines learning with art, offering an opportunity to try leaning through creativity and fine arts. One can experience drama, sound, games and mediums of visual art, and connect to artists and performers for future cooperation. Or, simply find joy and inspiration in the activities.

A SORROWFUL WOMAN, A JOYFUL MAN – WHY SO, ALL OF A SUDDEN. RAIT ROSIN

Rait Rosin plakat The exhibition conveys stories of women and men, and their attitudes toward each other. Different ideas of gender roles blend with notions of the arbitrariness of said roles. Within-gender variability is the reason why finding one’s place in society is both exciting and difficult. The author sees existential questions as a key to the process of individualisation. People are presumed to be equal, yet we are all unique. Meeting the expectations of society, adapting to rules of cohabitation, is a journey of self-determination. Individual traits may become a basis for self-expression.

Rait Rosin delves into philosophical topics such as experiences of corporeality through artistic means of expression and through a prism of pragmatist aesthetics. His main media are painting and performance art. He is currently in the middle of his doctoral studies at the Estonian Academy of Art.

A DREAM FOR ONE NIGHT

01.05 – 17.05 2015

The exhibition is a plunge into dream world. Every night is different. Every dream is different. Which is more real . night or day, dream or wakefulness, life or poetry?

Some thoughts from Doris Kareva on poetry, sleep and dreaming:

“A poem is like a dream; simultaneously a memory and imagination; a reality opening not via the line of life, but that of the destiny; a part of our world not acquired, but ever-present – a notice from the Universe.

A distant rumble in your pulse, an anthem, a hum, a heartbeat heard solely by our ever-playful inner child. She raises her head, listens – words become audible when the sound approaches, then silence descends again, beyond response and responsibility. A dream forgotten before the disciplinary whip of consciousness arrives; writing in the sand swept away by the forbidding tongue of waves.

A poem, a dream, and oblivion ever remain apparitions, trespassing the perceived boundary of reality; an awareness, an awakening – never, oh never are we more ourselves, never as free and yet as infinitely alone as in dreams and poetry – and maybe love.”

Participants: Helena Lasner, Eteri Tõlgo, Mikk Allas, Eha Koit, Avo Päädam, Katrin Kirsipuu, Kaie Kulper, Mari Põld, Anne Kase, Mai-Liis Moora, Helle Merisalu, Kristin Taru, Kristiina Tali, Ave Tislar, Karin Polluks, Tiina Tubli, Anne-Mai Heimola, Marge Vonk, Svea Sööt, Jürgen Korstnik, Marleen Müts.

PLACELESS

KOHATUpreview-424x600 The Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia continues its first ever tour of Estonia with a travelling exhibition “Placeless” with Rapla as the second stop en route from Kuressaare to Valga. The tour is an experiment where the institution transforms itself geographically along a line stretching across the country.

Paul Kuimet’s work “Placeless” that gave name to the event, is a curious photograph, with motives similar to the whole project. We explore a sense of place and placelessness, and have brought together artists whose work reflects those problems. They reflect upon and conceptualise places, placelessness, or even loss of place both in the spatial and the psychological sense. In every new location of our tour, we attempt to generate something site-specific, to give the place a reflection of itself. Other keywords we wish to critically explore are backwater and periphery, provincialism and conservatism, openness and closedness.

Together with the KUMU educational centre, we’ve prepared an educational programme “Sense of PLACE” targeted at the first through third stage of elementary school. A lecture programme for older students and adults also takes place at every location, with topics modified according to the location’s particulars.

Participants: Kristiina Hansen, Flo Kasearu, Eve Kask, Paul Kuimet, Marco Laimre, Tanel Rander, Tõnis Saadoja, Silja Saarepuu & Villu Plink, John Smith

Curators: Marten Esko, Anders Härm
