LIGHT

Late November and early December are the darkest time of the year. The exhibition LIGHT brings you dialogues and interactions by 15 authors with the phenomenon of light. Glass is the predominant material, becoming light’s perfect partner through its transparency. A sense of mystery and eternity permeates the pieces, from Kati Kerstna’s singing “Wells” through Eve Koha’s dream-like geometry, Sofi Aršas’s visions of history, Piret Ellamaa’s yearning for stars, to Torsten Rötzch’s haunting “Northern Light.” Designer Ain Toim’s ethereal installation “Poetry for Three” is dedicated to poetess Kristiina Ehin, whose verses are part of the work. Also participating is Estonia’s most celebrated glass artist Ivo Lill.

Across Generations 2

The exhibition is dedicated to Rapla County artist Leopold Teder, whose 100th anniversary we celebrated this year. The artists’s grandchildren, Jaanus Samma and Markus Tõnisson, complement their grandfather’s work with their own creations.

Leopold Teder was born July 8, 1913 in Tartu County, Otepää town. In 1914, his parents relocated to Tartu. He graduated from the XV Primary Scool of Tartu in 1927, and from Tartu Craft School in 1933 as a furniture and car painter, and from Tartu Unified Gymnasium in 1934. Between 1930 and 1935, he intermittently studied at the Pallas Art School of Tartu. In the 1950s, he joined a long-distance course at the Tartu Art School, which he never graduated. Teder mostly worked in the media of painting and printmaking, and exhibited his works in various solo and group exhibitions since 1950. He was an active founder of the Rapla Arts’ Club. Leopold Teder died April 3, 1989.

Markus Tõnisson (b. 1972) is a painter and graphic designer, who graduated from the Tartu Art School in 1998. In this exhibition, he shows a few recent paintings.

Jaanus Samma (b. 1982) is a freelance artist who graduated fro the Estonian Academy of Art (MA) in 2009, specialising in printmaking. He continues with his doctoral studies at the same academy, specialising in art and design. He was awarded the Köler Prize by the Estonian Museum of Contemporary Art in 2011. At this exhibition, he displays large-scale photo installations.

DESIRES

näituse plakat IhadThrough various means of artistic expression, the authors’ hidden desires get revealed.

At the spring exhibition of RCCCA, we display the sources of the joy of life, subconscious processes, and aspects of the mystical.

The opening features a performance by students of the Rapla Vesiroosi Gymnasium.

THE LINE FLOWING BENEATH YOUR HAND

Photos by Kaari Saarna

It is not a common sight to have Michelangelo, Vermeer and Piero della Francesca, Paul Gauguin, Edward Hopper, Edvard Munch and Edgar Degas meeting under the same roof. Yet, this is what you see at the exhibition, where students of the RCCCA have painted copies of the classics. Inspiration came from a book of the same title by Mathura, dedicated to artists that have inspired the author. A rare chance to see so many classics, but also hear the authors’ thoughts, and a classical guitar performance by Vahur Kubja.
